The game was quickly over and the ref seemed to relax a bit after the first 20 minutes. And from that moment he started to make a few mistakes. People might notice the * in the review on the 60th minute. More about that in after the competency summary as this was a very special case that the ref missed.

All in all a score just around acceptable in a game with little history. But it did contain a bit of history in the way that the ref made a big mistake in the 60th minute. And as always I feel glad about such a thing because it gives me the chance to highlight a part of the rules.

In the 60th minute Newcastle is in the attack and a cross flies past everyone and ends up with Essou-Ekoto. He controls the ball, then lifts the ball on to his knee and then lifts it to his head and then plays a back pass to Friedel. The ref let it go but he should have stopped the game and should have given an indirect free kick to Newcastle. Because and I take this from the laws of the game and the instructions for the referees where they talk about a back pass to the keeper:

There are different circumstances when a player must be cautioned for unsporting behaviour, e.g. if a player:

….

Uses a deliberate trick while the ball is in play to pass the ball to his own goalkeeper with his head, chest, knee, etc. in order to circumvent the Law, irrespective of whether the goalkeeper touches the ball with his hands or not. The offence is committed by the player in attempting to circumvent both the letter and the spirit of Law 12 and play is restarted with an indirect free kick.

….

So Essou-Ekoto did all this and the ref did nothing. Not give an indirect free kick to Newcastle and not give a yellow card against Essou-Ekoto.

An amazing incident for me and a bad miss from the ref. Maybe another example of his concentration not being completely up any more?

But credit to the ref for keeping the wrong calls in balance. I actually cannot remember a game where the ref made the same number of mistakes for both teams.

So not the best score but even for both teams in the mistakes. And one surely big missed call like I explained earlier on.
