Untold Ref Review: Manchester City 3 – 2 Queens Park Rangers « Untold Arsenal: Arsenal News. Supporting the Lord Wenger; coach of the decade
This article is part of a series stretching over several seasons in which a team of referees analyse the work of refs in Premier League matches.
Our figures show that when we analyse the errors made by refs there are consistent trends which do not “even out” through the season, as some commentators would have it. All the earlier ref reviews plus analyses of the errors made by refs, and articles relating to our campaign to have the body which organises referees activities reformed, plus an analysis of the background to this campaign, can be found on:
Although this is a site built for Arsenal supporters we welcome comments from fans of other teams, although we tend not to publish comments which are simply abusive or which are completely off topic.
Today’s referee is Mike Dean –

Well Queens Park Rangers didn’t came to kick City to pieces. Apart from the one and only Joey Barton of course. It was amazing how clean the QPR players behaved themselves. I have seen other games from them this season….
The first time we have to mention him he was innocent. He clashed heads with Barry and much to my surprise the ref gave a free kick to QPR. That was a mistake ref, there was never a foul from Barry. In fact there was no foul so he should have restarted with a dropped ball.
Next again Barton who came in frontal towards Barry, that could have ended up bad but luckily there were no injuries. Ref Dean missed it. City went in 1-0 at half time and the goal was correct.
QPR scored an equalizer and then stepped up Tevez and Barton. I must say TV Director decided to show the angles that did us no favours. It was difficult to see but Barton tried to obstruct Tevez who threw his arm towards Barton who then did the same.
The problem with the ref is that as has been noticed by other reviewers, Dean is always too central in his running. And so he was at the wrong place to have a good look on the incident. His assistant informed him on what he had seen but this should have been an angle that the ref should cover. Bad placement ref Dean and this is not the first time we have to say this about him.
So only Barton got a red card and his behaviour after that justified this. But Tevez was the luckiest man on the pitch because of the bad placement (or blindness from the ref) he escaped a red card also.
City had a shout for a penalty for handball but the ball came from behind the QPR player who didn’t know that the ball came back to his hand. So clear ball to hand and correct not to give it.
Bothroyd got the softest of yellow cards for a little pull. Another bad point for the ref.
The game reached an unbelievable climax with the two late goals from City at a moment when QPR seemed to settle for every result after they knew Bolton lost at Stoke (thanks to the ref apparently)

The bias score shows an advantage in favour of QPR. Manchester united fans cannot say that City got the title handed over by the ref in this game.
