Apology?
Throughout the summer of 2007 every single newspaper in the UK ran stories which said that Arsenal were in trouble. They had sold Henry, and Fabregas and Wenger were about to follow him to Barca. In desperation Arsenal were looking to make a big name signing. Dead beat centre-forwards who scored just a handful of goals for anyone from inferior teams such as West Ham to Atletico Madrid were mentioned day after day. Every single attempt was made to destabilise the club and its players. And then on July 2 2007 two things happened. Arsenal signed Dynamo Zagreb striker Eduardo da Silva – who had scored seven goals in Croatia’s last 12 internationals, plus broken all Croatian scoring records. On the same day Fabregas made an announcement that he had read some of the stories in the press, could confirm they were all total nonsense, and that he was really excited about next season at Arsenal – exactly what he had said last season. So, to the facts… Number of newspapers that ran stories that said Arsenal were about to sign someone from West Ham or some other deadbeat club: all of them Number of newspapers that even mentioned Eduardo da Silva as an option: None Number of newspapers that said Fabregas was going to leave: All of them Number of newspapers that apologised either for giving the wrong information or for not giving any accurate information: None. You always know where you stand with British journalists. |
