Euro League
The forthcoming European league will not, as the press have supposed, come out of the European Champions League, but will be a reserve team league for clubs like Arsenal who have a second string that is far too strong to play in the national reserve league, and are looking for matches. Arsenal famously use the little cup (known in 2008 as the Carling Cup, but with all sorts of other names at different times) to play their reserve team against the first teams of lesser teams. But this only gives them a few games each year, Most years Arsenal get to the semi-finals at least, and that gives the players five games – which is not enough. Of late Arsenal has also given the players an outing in the FA Cup too – and the FA have been worried about this tendency. In Spain the big clubs play their reserve teams in the second division of the league, but the clubs and leagues are not willing to allow that in England. So the FA are allowing the development of a European league for reserve teams. Clubs such as Arsenal, Milan, Inter, Porto, Lyon, Ajax are in discussions. |
