For the trip to Dortmund in the CL we got the Italian ref Gianluca Rocchi. Most of the time I like Italian refs but was this one of the usually high standard we see? We can find it out. Just read further.

Well it was a great referee performance for me. Hardly any fouls missed and this resulted in very high scores.
We also have seen some great pro-active work by the ref with not allowing the first corner to be taken and first pointing at some players who are pushing or pulling or Walcott who was interfering with the keeper before the ball was taken. It can be that simple to stop those things. The players are aware of the ref and that he will take action so they just leave it and act according to the laws. Hello refs in the EPL did you take notice?
The only disappointing thing for me was in fact the offside call from the assistant. When a player takes a shot at goal and the ball goes out to a corner you don’t come back to the possible offside position. As the ball didn’t reach the player he didn’t gain advantage from the offside position. The team gains advantage from the fact that the defender pushed the ball in corner but if the striker doesn’t attack the defender (Gervinho just stood there in an offside position) or interferes with play he is in a non punishable offside position. Maybe the only real mistake by the ref and his assistants.
