5 Lies they love to tell about Arsenal. 1. Hot dogs cost £10 each. No one is going to say that the food in the WengerDrome is cheap, and no one is going to say that for the ordinary supporters it is gourmet, but the reality is that it is better than in most grounds. And the hot dogs don’t cost £10. There is a very large food item that looks like a giant hot dog, but which, I am told is a lot better than a hot dog. It costs £4 with a drink. 2. Arsenal is the most expensive ground in the country. Comparing like for like (for example upper tier centre with upper tier centre, or lower tier corner flag with the same, Arsenal is cheaper than Tottenham and Chelsea. What’s more for some matches Arsenal drop prices. For example while Man U run the scheme in which supporters who are season ticket holders must buy tickets for their Carling Cup games, Arsenal have no such scheme, and indeed normally cut their prices to around £10 and £20 for such games. 3. The cheapest price at a normal Arsenal first team game is £50. For a regular first team fixture the prices range from £66 for upper tier front on the half way line to £32. Seniors get tickets for £14 and children for £13 4. Arsenal cannot claim to be continuing their heritage when they are using so many foreign players. In fact the original Arsenal teams at the Royal Arsenal in Woolwich were almost totally non-English, and records show that a large number of games were played with non-English XIs. English players became more common after Arsenal moved to Highbury, but even then there were long periods where at least half the team was non-English – Irish players being particularly strongly represented in the team. 5. Arsenal were the first team to introduce large numbers of non-English players. The first major game in which there were no English players was the Cup final in 1986 in which Liverpool put out a totally non-English team |
